About Orbit
Orbit is an iPhone app that compares two people's birth charts planet by planet. The iPhone app is not on the App Store yet; you can get your compatibility reading on the web today.
What Orbit does
You enter your date, time and place of birth, and someone else's, and Orbit shows how the two charts relate: which planets form which angles, what each angle usually means, and a score for four areas (chemistry, communication, emotional fit and staying power). It also gives a daily reading from your own chart and an AI astrologer you can ask follow-up questions. If you do not know someone's birth details, you can send them a link and they add their own.
How the calculations work
We believe in being clear about method, because astrology tools rarely are.
- Bodies: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. We do not currently use the outer planets, nodes or asteroids.
- Positions: computed from standard orbital elements (Schlyter's low-precision method) for the exact date and time of birth, converted from the local time zone of the birthplace. The result is accurate enough for sign placement and for the aspects Orbit uses.
- Rising sign: calculated from the birth time and the latitude and longitude of the birthplace.
- Aspects: conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition, with an orb of up to 6°. Tighter angles count for more.
- Checked against a reference: we compared our planet positions with an independent astronomy library over 3,000 random dates between 1935 and 2026. The largest difference was about 0.1° (the Moon); the Sun and planets were within 0.06°.
- The match score: the score in the app is built from the aspects above and from how well the signs of the key planets get along (Venus and Mars, the Moons, the Suns, Mercury). There is no randomness: the same two people always get the same number, and swapping their order changes nothing. The raw result is then ranked against a large set of simulated pairs, which sets the 31–98 scale and is where "more compatible than X% of pairs" comes from. The free calculator shows the aspects and a qualitative read only, with no score.
- Same engine everywhere: the website, the free calculator and the iOS app use the same calculations.
The explanation of each result is written by AI from the calculated chart, and the AI astrologer answers using your own placements. AI can be wrong or generic, which is why we show the underlying angles so you can check them against the guides on this site.
Editorial standards for the blog
- Guides explain established astrological techniques and say where astrologers disagree.
- We do not make predictions, and we do not give medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
- Every guide states what astrology cannot tell you. It is a tradition of reflection and is not scientifically validated as a predictor of events or relationship outcomes.
- Comparisons with other apps are based on their public pages and store listings. We say that we make Orbit, and we mark where we are unsure. Tell us if something is out of date and we will correct it.
- Posts show a published date and, when changed, an updated date.
