Houses in Synastry: Where Your Partner's Planets Land in Your Chart
House overlays in synastry show where one person's planets fall in the other's birth chart, and therefore which area of life that person activates. If your partner's Venus lands in your 7th house, they tend to bring warmth into your sense of partnership; if their Saturn lands in your 5th, they may make romance and play feel more serious.
What a house overlay is
Every birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each a department of life (home, work, relationships, money). In synastry you take each planet from person B's chart and drop it into person A's houses, and then do the reverse. The result describes the area where each person is felt.
This is one of the three layers in a full reading, alongside the planets themselves and the aspects between charts, as described in Synastry Explained.
You need an accurate birth time
Houses are calculated from the rising sign and so depend on the exact birth time and place. A difference of an hour or two can shift planets into a different house. If a birth time is uncertain, treat house overlays as provisional and lean on aspects instead. See Sun, Moon and Rising for why timing matters.
The houses that matter most in relationships
| House | Area | What a partner's planets here tend to mean |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, first impressions | They strongly affect how you feel about yourself and come across |
| 4th | Home, family, emotional roots | They make the relationship feel like home, or stir up family patterns |
| 5th | Romance, fun, creativity | Playfulness, flirtation, a sense of enjoyment |
| 7th | Committed partnership | They feel like a "partner" figure; commitment themes |
| 8th | Intimacy, shared resources, depth | Intense bonding, trust, merging; sometimes power struggles |
| 10th | Career, public life | They influence your ambitions or how you are seen |
The other houses (2nd, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 11th, 12th) matter too, for example the 3rd for communication and siblings, the 9th for shared beliefs and travel, and the 11th for friendship, but the six above come up most often in romantic readings.
Planet in house: examples
The planet tells you what is being activated; the house tells you where.
- Their Venus in your 7th house: affection and appreciation in the partnership area; they feel like a natural partner.
- Their Mars in your 5th house: passion, playfulness and drive in romance and fun.
- Their Moon in your 4th house: emotional comfort and a sense of home; they feel like family.
- Their Sun in your 1st house: they strongly affect how you feel about yourself; you may feel highly visible to each other.
- Their Saturn in your 8th house: serious, careful intimacy; trust is built slowly.
- Their Pluto in your 8th house: intense, transformative bonding that can feel consuming.
These are readings of tendency. The tight aspects between the planets themselves are usually more revealing than which house they fall in.
Both directions
Overlays go both ways, and they are often not symmetrical. Your Venus might land in their 7th house while their Venus lands in your 3rd. That means you feel like a partner to them, while they feel more like a friend or conversation partner to you. Looking at both directions can explain why two people experience a relationship differently.
Which house system?
Astrologers use different systems to divide the houses (for example Placidus and Whole Sign). They agree on many placements but can put a planet in different houses near a boundary. If a planet lies close to a house cusp, check which system your calculator uses and treat the result as approximate.
What house overlays cannot tell you
House overlays describe where energy is likely to be felt, not how a relationship will unfold. Astrology is a framework for reflection and is not scientifically validated as a predictor of relationship outcomes. Use overlays as a way to put words to what each of you seems to stir up in the other.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most important house in synastry?
The 7th house (committed partnership) and 5th house (romance) are usually the most watched for romance, but the 4th, 8th and 1st houses are also important. The aspects between planets often matter more than the houses alone.
What does Venus in the 8th house mean in synastry?
Their Venus in your 8th house suggests affection tied to depth, intimacy and trust. It often feels intense and bonding.
Can I do house overlays without birth time?
Not reliably. Houses depend on the birth time, so use aspects between planets until you have an accurate time.
Do house overlays work in both directions?
Yes. You compare each person's planets in the other's houses, and the two directions can differ.
